Dutch and Flemish Golden Age

The galleries house one of the world's largest collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art. The circular route leads directly to the octagonal Rembrandt room, which showcases 16 works by the artist, including Moses with the Tablets of the Law. Visitors view genre scenes, landscapes, and allegorical works, including Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Netherlandish Proverbs and Two Monkeys.

The collection also features two paintings by Johannes Vermeer, including The Wine Glass and Woman with a Pearl Necklace. These masterpieces highlight the use of light, shadow, and domestic realism that defined Northern European painting during this historical economic era, allowing art historians to study the development of easel painting styles.

Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art

The collection presents Italian art spanning the 13th to the 18th centuries, arranged across dedicated viewing rooms. Visitors observe paintings by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Raphael, and Titian. Notable highlights include Sandro Botticelli’s Virgin and Child with Singing Angels, Raphael’s Solly Madonna, and Titian’s Venus with the Organ Player, alongside Caravaggio’s famous Baroque masterpiece Amor Vincit Omnia.

The exhibition space utilizes colored walls to organize the tempera and oil paintings. The chronological progression shows the evolution of Italian art from early Byzantine-influenced altarpieces to the dramatic light contrasts of the Roman Baroque period, offering visitors a comprehensive art history survey across multiple centuries of creative artistic achievement.

Architectural design

The museum building, completed in 1998 by architects Hilmer and Sattler, features a functional spatial design centered entirely around natural illumination. The central hall and surrounding exhibition rooms utilize a specialized daylight-filtering ceiling system.

The octagonal Rembrandt Room contains a geometric, multi-tiered skylight structure constructed from glass blocks that distributes diffused, uniform daylight directly onto the hanging canvases. This structural choice prevents artificial glare and allows visitors to observe the original paint textures and color pigments under optimal conditions.

The 72 individual galleries arrange themselves around a spacious central foyer, creating a circular layout where structural engineering directly enhances the display of the historical paintings.

In addition to the regular Monday closures, the museum closes and adjusts its regular opening hours on certain holidays:

• December 26 (Boxing Day): 10:00 to 18:00
• December 31 (New Year's Eve): Closed
• January 1 (New Year's Day): 12:00 to 18:00
• Other public holidays (including Good Friday, Easter, and German Unification Day): 10:00 to 18:00

How to get there

The museum occupies a central position inside the Kulturforum complex. Visitors access the site via multiple public transportation lines:

• By Subway (U-Bahn): Line U2 stops at Potsdamer Platz.
• By Train (S-Bahn): Lines S1, S2, S25, and S26 stop at Potsdamer Platz.
• By Bus Lines: Line 200 stops at Philharmonie. Lines M48 and M85 stop at Kulturforum. Line M29 stops at Potsdamer Brücke.

Entrances

The visitor entrance sits on the Matthäikirchplatz / piazzetta of the Kulturforum, which connects the Gemäldegalerie with adjacent museums. A barrier-free ramp provides full wheelchair access from the plaza into the multi-level entrance hall.

The bright foyer features soaring white pillars, skylights providing natural daylight, and a central staircase leading to the upper gallery levels. Inside this main lobby, visitors scan their tickets, access cloakroom services, and utilize secure lockers before heading upstairs into the main exhibition spaces.
