The New Wing

The New Wing attaches to the eastern side of the main palace structure, extending the facade into the surrounding parkland. Friedrich the Great commissioned architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff to construct this addition in 1740. The building holds architectural relevance by showcasing Prussian Rococo design standards across two primary floors.

Notable spaces inside include the Golden Gallery ballroom and the White Hall dining room, which housed historical ceremonial functions. The rooms display period furniture, French paintings by Antoine Watteau, and royal art collections from the 18th century. The extension demonstrates the transition of the Prussian court toward French decorative influences.

The New Pavilion

The New Pavilion stands in the eastern section of the palace gardens near the banks of the Spree River. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the structure in 1824 for King Friedrich Wilhelm III as a private summer retreat. The venue holds relevance as a primary example of Neoclassical architecture in Berlin.

The interior galleries display fine art, sculptures, and crafted furniture from the early 19th century, highlighting Morning in the Giant Mountains by Caspar David Friedrich alongside works by Schinkel and other romantic artists. Surrounded by flower beds, the building provides structural insight into royal domestic life during the Biedermeier period while displaying preserved decorative craftsmanship.

The Belvedere Tea House

The Belvedere Tea House sits on the northern edge of the palace gardens beside the Spree River. Carl Gotthard Langhans designed the multi-story building in 1788 to serve as a royal teahouse and observation point. The venue holds cultural relevance by housing an extensive permanent porcelain collection from the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, widely known as KPM.

Visitors inspect historical porcelain dining sets, decorative vases, and manufactured ceramics spanning three centuries of local production. The upper viewing level overlooks the Spree River and park grounds, illustrating 18th-century royal recreational architecture integrated seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape environment.

The Palace Gardens

The Palace Gardens surround the entire Charlottenburg estate along the Spree River banks. Designed initially in 1695 as a formal French Baroque garden, Siméon Godeau shaped the layout before landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné converted key sections into an English landscape park during the 19th century.

The grounds hold relevance as a historic public green space displaying three centuries of European landscape design evolution. Visitors encounter expansive open lawns, carp ponds, marble statues, and historical tree-lined avenues. The park remains accessible daily, connecting the individual architectural structures across the property with the natural riverbanks.

Closing days and special dates

All museum facilities in the Charlottenburg estate close to the public every Monday. Fixed annual closures and special holiday hours apply as follows:

• December 24 and 25 (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day): All palace buildings close.
• December 31 (New Year's Eve): The Old Palace and New Wing open from 10:00 to 14:00 (last admission at 13:30).
• January 1 (New Year's Day): All palaces open from 11:00 to 16:30.

How to get there

The main complex occupies Spandauer Damm 10-22 in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin:

• S-Bahn: Regional lines S41, S42, and S46 stop at Westend station or Jungfernheide station, located within walking distance of the gates.
• U-Bahn: Underground line U7 services Richard-Wagner-Platz station and Mierendorffplatz station, while line U2 services Sophie-Charlotte-Platz station.
• Bus: Municipal bus lines M45 and 309 stop directly at the Schloss Charlottenburg station in front of the main court.

Entrances

The Charlottenburg Palace complex maintains distinct physical entry points for its primary exhibition areas:

• Old Palace: Serves as the main entrance to the overall palace complex. The primary historical portal faces the central courtyard. While steps lead up to the central foyer, a designated barrier-free entrance operates via a side ramp near the visitor center and gift shop area. Wheelchair users access ground-floor exhibition halls and upper-level state apartments using an interior passenger elevator.
• New Wing: Located on the eastern side of the complex, this entrance features a step-free ramp. Interior elevators allow mobility-impaired guests to reach the gallery rooms on the upper floor.
• Park Buildings: The New Pavilion provides an inclined platform lift at its entry. The Mausoleum and Belvedere contain structural steps and gravel approach paths that require assistance for wheelchair access.
