What can you see at the Bode Museum?
The Sculpture Collection
The Sculpture Collection displays carvings spanning the Middle Ages to the late 18th century. In the Small Dome Hall, visitors examine Jean-Baptiste Pigalle’s marble sculpture Mercury, commissioned by Louis XV for Frederick the Great in 1748. The galleries also showcase Donatello’s relief The Pazzi Madonna, illustrating early Italian Renaissance perspective, alongside wooden carvings by Tilman Riemenschneider. Andreas Schlüter’s equestrian statue of the Great Elector dominates the entrance hall.
By presenting these three-dimensional works next to paintings of the same periods, the museum establishes a dialogue between different artistic mediums. This chronological layout guides visitors through the development of European sculpture over several centuries.
